I found Mamas Cafe Baci on the Find Me Gluten Free app. Based on all of the reviews I knew I had to give it a try so my boyfriend and I went for a special occasion this weekend. It is located in Hackettstown, New Jersey which is not close to that much, but about an hour outside of New York City.
We went on a Saturday night and I was surprised that the parking lot was completely full for being in a mountain town. The inside of the restaurant is decorated in Italian inspired designs, smells like my grandmothers kitchen and had live music. The wait was only 5 minutes which was great for having to park across the street. When we gave our name they asked if we would need a a gluten free menu. They also had a vegan/vegetarian menu.
I let them know of my other allergies beforehand and received a “certified gluten free” tag for our table. When our waitress came over she assured me that they did not cook with soy oil and it was very easy to order a dish without nuts. The manager even came over to chat with us. Their gluten free menu is 15 pages long. That is the longest gluten free menu I have ever seen. So. Many Options.
They brought over gluten free bread for me and regular bread for my boyfriend. I usually don’t enjoy gluten free bread, but it was good. For appetizers we ordered the gluten free cheese bread and fried calamari. The cheese bread was out of this world. It was made with pizza bread and did not taste gluten free at all (definitely was). The calamari was even better than some of the gluten filled calamari I had before my diagnosis. The breading was so good.
I was not even hungry for dinner at that point, but I ordered chicken parm and cheese ravioli, both of which were gluten free. Their menu has “duets” that allow you to order halves of two different meals which is awesome if you are like me and can’t make decisions. I was not disappointed in my choices at all. My boyfriend was just as satisfied with his regular meal. For dessert we ordered two gluten free mini cannolis to go. I never thought I would have another one of those again.
I am excited to try the mozzarella sticks and lobster raviolis next. They also have a delivery service that will probably tempt me every night that I don’t feel like cooking. They even do gluten free catering.
I would travel far distances to eat at a place like this. Luckily, I only live 15 minutes away and will be returning frequently. I am looking forward to my next visit to Mamas.
